San Sano is part of the municipality of Gaiole in Chianti, historically an important centre of trade and a crossroads between the Chianti country and the upper Arno Valley. The town is now the renowned starting point of the Eroica, a vintage bicycle race on unpaved country roads held on the first Sunday of October each year.

You will of course want to take a selfie with the beautiful iron cockerel by artist Fabio Zacchei at the entrance to the town!

The Etruscan archaeological site of Cetamura is only a few kilometres from Gaiole. Find out all about it at https://www.cetamuradelchianti.com/, where you can take a virtual tour of the excavations.

It’s also well worth visiting the many medieval villages around the town, such as Barbischio, Vertine, Castagnoli, San Giusto in Salcio and Badia a Coltibuono, and the castles of Meleto, Brolio, Bossi, Cacchiano and Lucignano (stopping under the big holm oak tree to admire the splendid Chianti vineyards).

The area around Gaiole is perfect for cycling and hiking! A number of gps tracks for hiking routes may be downloaded free of charge at https://www.comune.gaiole.si.it/contatti/ufficio-informazioni-turistiche/2-generale/860-tracce-gps-sentieri
