San Sano

San Sano: A Village of History and Tradition in the Heart of Chianti

San Sano is a charming small village with Etrusco-Roman origins, which reached its peak during the Middle Ages, when a fortification and a church were built. During the 16th century, its strategic position made it the center of a bloody dispute between the Sienese and the Florentines, which culminated in the pillaging and burning of the village. After the conflict, San Sano became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and gradually transformed into an agricultural village: its ancient fortifications were turned into farmhouses, while the surrounding woods gave way to vineyards for wine production.

The viticultural value of the land was recognized as early as the 18th century. In 1773, the doctor Giovanni Cosimo Villifranchi, in his treatise on Tuscan enology, wrote: “The Chianti region stretches from thirty to forty miles, and the main places where the best Chianti wine is produced under this name are Ama, Broglio, Castellina, San Sano, and Cacchiano.”

San Sano Today

Today, San Sano is a perfectly preserved village with around 80 residents. Walking through its narrow streets, you can still admire remnants of its medieval past, such as an ancient well and the keep of the fortification, now part of Agriturismo San Sano.

One of the most curious symbols of the village is the “Rana Beona” Fountain, which depicts a frog drinking from a flask of wine. Installed in 1967, the fountain originates from the participation of local historian Maestro Ferdinando Anichini in the television show Il Tappabuchi hosted by Corrado, where he imitated the croak of a drunken frog after drinking Chianti wine. The sketch became famous, and the “Rana Beona” fountain has since become the symbol of San Sano.
